- Late payments — 7 years from the date of delinquency.
- Collections and charge-offs — 7 years plus 180 days from first delinquency.
- Repossessions and foreclosures — 7 years.
- Chapter 13 bankruptcy — 7 years; Chapter 7 — 10 years.
- Hard inquiries — 2 years (scored for 12 months).
- Judgments and tax liens — generally excluded from consumer reports today.
Removability
The older and more times a debt has been sold, the weaker the documentation behind it — and the higher the deletion rate. Recent items usually require a documentation or compliance angle rather than a simple verification failure.
