Understanding Credit

How to Read a Credit Report

Decode the codes, dates, and status fields where most errors hide.

5 min read

The fields that matter most

  • Date of First Delinquency — controls when the item must fall off. Errors here are gold.
  • Date of Last Activity — often manipulated to re-age old debt.
  • Account Status vs. Payment Status — these must be consistent.
  • High Credit / Credit Limit — a missing limit inflates your utilization.
  • Payment history grid — 30/60/90/120 codes that must match the status.

Compare all three

Line up Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion side by side. Any field that differs between bureaus is, by definition, inaccurate somewhere — and that is a dispute.

The Bottom Line

We do this audit for free. Most reports we review contain multiple provable errors.
