How to Remove a Bankruptcy

Bankruptcies report for 7–10 years, but the accounts inside them are often wrong.

Attack the accounts, then the public record

Every account discharged in bankruptcy must report a zero balance and a 'included in bankruptcy' status. Any discharged account still showing a balance, a past-due amount, or ongoing late marks is inaccurate and disputable.

The public record itself

Courts do not report directly to the bureaus — third-party vendors scrape the data. If the bureau cannot verify the filing details with the source, the record must come off. Check the filing date, chapter, case number, and discharge date against your court documents.

The Bottom Line

Even when the filing stays, cleaning the accounts inside it moves your score meaningfully.
