Late payments are frequently misreported
Payments applied after a due date change, autopay failures on the creditor's end, payments credited to the wrong account, and deferment or forbearance periods coded as delinquent are all extremely common.
Two paths to removal
- Accuracy dispute — prove the payment was made on time or the grid is inconsistent.
- Goodwill escalation — for genuine one-off lates on otherwise perfect accounts, a documented hardship request to the creditor's executive office often produces removal.
The Bottom Line
One removed late payment can be the difference between a decline and an approval.
